The Wisdom of Leaders Who Value Their Time

For leaders, time is one of the most precious resources available to leaders. Moses, the founding leader of the nation of Israel, recognized this truth deeply, capturing its essence in Psalm 90:12. (Yes, for those of us who thought David wrote all the Psalms in the Hebrew scriptures, Moses wrote a Psalm!) Psalm 90:12 shares, “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”

Scholars believe Moses wrote this Psalm after leading for more than forty years; he was perhaps in his 80s as the nation was preparing to enter the Promised Land! This profound prayer speaks directly to leaders of all ages leading across all ages, reminding us that how we spend our days impacts not only our lives but those we lead.

Leaders Choose Purpose Over Urgency

In a leadership role, it’s easy to become absorbed in urgent tasks, meetings, and decisions. However, the wisest leaders recognize that time is not just for doing; it’s for reflection, connection, and growth. When Moses asked God to teach him to “number” his days, he was acknowledging his own need for perspective—something all leaders require. This perspective isn’t merely about productivity but about recognizing the importance of aligning our time management with our deeper values and mission.

Leaders Lead with Vision

As leaders, we must remember that every interaction, every project, and every goal should be a part of a larger vision. Taking a moment to reflect on this bigger vision allows us to ask questions like: Am I spending time on what truly matters? Is my leadership inspiring growth, creating value, and building a legacy, or am I simply managing the next crisis? When we recognize the value of our time, we become intentional in how we use it, focusing on what will have the most significant and lasting impact.

The Power of Rest for Leaders

Wisdom in time management also involves understanding the power of rest and renewal. Moses’ prayer reminds us to see our days as opportunities to grow in wisdom, not just in output. There’s a reason wisdom often emerges in quiet moments: in stepping back, we see patterns, gain clarity, understand motivations, and find new solutions.

Making Every day Count

Therefore, to be a wise steward of time, you and I should build routines that reinforce our leadership priorities. Whether it’s setting aside time for team development, focusing on strategic goals, or simply listening to the needs of those we lead, when we use our time well, it reflects wisdom in action.

Numbering our days is not about obsessing over the minutes but valuing each one as an opportunity to lead with vision and purpose. When you and I use our time wisely, we not only

elevate our leadership but inspire those around us to do the same, creating a legacy that endures far beyond the days we’ve numbered.
